Milk going warm by lunch, a puddle under the crisper or a compressor that never seems to rest? A local technician finds the cause, tells you what the fix involves before starting, and repairs the refrigerator right in your kitchen.
Side-by-side, French door, top and bottom freezer models
No. 02 · What goes wrong
These are the calls we get when a refrigerator starts acting strange. Each one lists the usual causes and a safe check you can do before booking a visit.
When power returns after a storm, the spike can hit the main board. The display lights up, yet nothing inside gets cold.
The small part on the side of the compressor gives it the push to start. A surge can burn it, and you hear a click every few minutes instead of a steady hum.
Older models with a mechanical timer can freeze in the defrost cycle when the power cuts out, so the cooling never switches back on.
Unplug the fridge for five minutes, check the breaker panel, then plug it back in. If the fresh-food section is still warm two hours later, keep the doors closed and call us.
A flattened or torn seal lets humid air slip in along the door edge. The moisture hits the cold surface and beads up on the outside.
Many side-by-side and French door models hide a low heater in the door frame or center strip. When it fails, water forms along that line.
This setting turns those heaters off to save power. In a humid Houston summer that often means wet door edges and drips on the floor.
Look for an Energy Saver or Power Saver button on the control panel and switch it off. Then close the door on a dollar bill: if it slides out with no drag, the gasket is not sealing.
A click, silence, then another click a few minutes later is the typical sign of a relay that tries to start the compressor and gives up.
This part shuts the compressor off when it runs too hot. Dusty coils or a weak relay can make it trip over and over.
If the relay and overload test fine, the compressor itself may be failing. We measure it first and talk through your options before anything else.
Unplug the fridge, take off the grille at the bottom and vacuum the coils and fan area. Heavy dust makes the compressor run hot and shut down.
Water and small bits of food sit in the drain line behind the back panel and spoil there, so the smell comes back no matter how often you wipe the shelves.
The pan under the fridge collects defrost water. In a warm garage or a humid kitchen it grows mold quickly.
An expired water filter can give ice and water an odd taste and smell, and mold likes the folds of the door seal.
Wipe the gasket folds with warm water and baking soda and look at the date on your water filter. Most manufacturers suggest a new one about every six months.
Not sure which one you have? We will find out.
